It’s the brilliant and majorly talented Afrika Green, professional drummer and author who currently works with the Pet Shop Boys, Becky Hill, Drum and Bass DJ High Contrast.
Afrika has toured and worked with some of the biggest names in the music business and is about to tell all in her much-anticipated book ‘Bright Lights Breakdown’.
'Afrika is an outstanding young drummer who can turn her hand to any style of music with natural ease” GUY CHAMBERS
'Big praise, but she has such rare contrast in her playing, one minute perfect economy, the next opening up like a sonic whirlwind! The hottest new drummer of her generation.” CERYS MATTHEWS (SINGER)

Show notes:
Affy talks about working with the Pet Shop Boys as well as going through a tough audition and plans for 2021’s Greatest Hits Tour
Affy began playing drums at the age of 14 – she talks about the release and relationship she developed with drumming and her journey through early life as an up and coming professional drummer. Affy reflects on how tough it was at the beginning of her career being a woman drummer amongst a predominately male profession – and how she dealt with it.
Affy talks about working with Becky Hill and with High Contrast, the latter she has closely followed all her life and was an inspiration to her.
Affy was selected with a group of 12 students leaving university by Guy Chambers, Goldie and Ms Dynamite among other global stars, to take part in a group project.
Affy is a leading voice for the ‘Bury St Edmunds 4 Black Lives’ (BSE4BL) group and talks about the incredible positive response from the town as well as her recent role of writing a column for the Bury Free Press. To get involved with BSE4BL visit their Facebook page here: https://www.facebook.com/BSE4BL
Affy is writing her book Bright Lights Breakdown which reflects on her career including all the highs and the lows and feels it’s a duty of care to write about her journey to show how she managed to be where she is today, including all the struggles, and to encourage others too.
We asked Affy 3 quick questions to finish with:
1. Who’s the best drummer in the world?
2. What’s the best live music performance she’s played in?
And
3. Have you ever dropped your sticks?!
You’ll just to have to listen to the episode to hear her brilliant answers!
