West Indies International Cricketer, John Maynard, talks about his cricketing career, playing for the West Indies and the Leeward Islands, alongside cricketing legends - Curtly Ambrose, Richie Richardson and Sir Viv Richards.

Growing up on the beautiful Caribbean Island of Nevis, part of the Leeward Islands, John talks about his earlier years playing cricket in the 80s and early 90s  – and how different it was in those days to today’s training and game. Cricket was, and still is, a way of life on Nevis and played in every school. It brings family and friends together – as one big cricket community.

John tells us some incredible stories of his journey to becoming an international cricketer, the highs and the lows,  the determination and the demolition of some of greatest batsmens' averages!

John has played cricket in England for years and has played for numerous clubs up and down the country. More lately he has become a prolific coach and works with several clubs across the country.

The Newmarket Cricket Club opened to members last year and John talks about wanting the club to be part of the community, a place for people to get together, enjoy cricket and having a good deal of fun – for everyone. From top county players to non-players, girls, boys, men and women – he is inviting everyone to join in and get involved. John will be setting up a junior team and hopes the club will be ready to enter a league by 2022. John is also well-know for talent spotting and he is well-connected with the Suffolk County Cricket Club – and looks forward to taking on exceptional players to the top.

The Newmarket Cricket Club is open to players, non-players, spectators, volunteers and anyone who wants to join in the cricketing fun and community. Later in the year you can join John and the NCC team on Friday nights for a little cricket and a barbecue! Go find him and have a chat!
